Spring is here but not quite in full bloom yet! For those of us who have littles, coming back in after only an hour outside because of the April rains might not be an easy feat. BUT, with a fun craft up your sleeve, it might make the afternoon downpour a bit more interesting! While keeping the sunny season in mind, we came up with a great craft for the kiddos (or even for the adults to put on their desk!). The ocean in a bottle is super easy AND cheap; all we need is a bottle of your choosing (preferably plastic), blue food coloring, baby oil, hot glue gun and any decorations you want! All of our supplies we bought from Michaels for less than $8 and we have plenty left for more later!
Step one would be to fill the bottle 2/3 with water, and have the kiddos squeeze in the food coloring (very cool to watch). Once that is the desired color, just add any decorations! Some ideas include: Finding Nemo or Moana themes. After the decorations are in, we need the baby oil to make that true ocean wave; add oil until the bottle is almost full.
The final step is to seal our container! This part could be dangerous to littles and needs an adult. With the hot glue gun, slather the glue all over the cork or lid to make sure it is completely water proof. After putting in the oil and shaking the bottle around a bit, it might look a little cloudy and that’s completely normal. Having it sit still for about 10 minutes clears it right up!
This is one of my daughters favorite things now! Watching the ‘fishies’ swim around in her own personal ocean completely distracts from any outdoor activities she might be missing with the erratic rain lately! Even though summer is still a little in the future, this cool craft will be sure to keep our sights aimed for sunnier, warmer, and more sand filled days!
I hope you and your littles enjoy this afternoon activity as much as Madison and I.
As always, if you have any craft ideas, any comments, or suggestions, I am very much appreciative of your feedback! Thanks for stopping by, see you again soon!
